The Issuance of a Commemorative Silver Coin for the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Founding Father of the Republic of China

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China, the Central Bank will issue a “Commemorative Silver Coin for the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Founding Father of the Republic of China” on November 12, 2015. This fine commemorative silver coin weighs an ounce, is legal tender and is engraved with a face value of NT$100.

The Bank has delegated the Bank of Taiwan to sell the commemorative silver coin to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, limited to one silver coin per purchaser at a time. A total of 38,000 silver coins will be issued. It costs NT$1,500 each.

The description of the commemorative silver coin is as follows:

Obverse: The main design features a portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, with the national flag of the Republic of China to its left, and the number of years since the birth of Dr. Sun to the right. The upper field is engraved with Chinese characters that mean “In Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Founding Father of the Republic of China.” “The 104th Year of the Republic of China” in Chinese characters is engraved along the inside edge at the bottom.

Reverse: The upper field features two separate latent images. Rotating the face of the coin towards the right reveals the image of plum blossoms, and towards the left, the shape of the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei. Dr. Sun's own calligraphy of “The Great Commonwealth” is inscribed in Chinese characters in the middle of the field. The 100-dollar face value of the coin in Arabic numerals with the Chinese character “Yuan” is inscribed beneath it. A design pattern of plum blossoms encircles the inside edge, interrupted at mid-point on the left by “1 oz.”, and on the right, “Ag999”.
