The Presidential Office
The Presidential Office building, completed in 1919, housed the Governor-General’s Office during the Japanese Colonial Era. A major landmark, the building was severely damaged during World War II. After the war, the building was restored and became the Presidential Office of the Republic of China on Taiwan in 1950. Today, it is still the seat of political power in Taiwan.
The Presidential Office building and its surrounding grounds have been designated a historic site. The building reflects the baroque style of the late Renaissance. The imposing neoclassical façade features architectural elements including columns, gables, œil de bœuf windows, wall brackets, Roman columns, and compound piers. The entire structure was carefully designed and is earthquake-resistant.
